If you are a fresh market fruit and vegetable producer selling at local farmers markets, road-side stands, or through a CSA or are a market manager interested in helping your vendors and farmers market to be successful, the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Grower Workshop is for you.
The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Grower Workshop will provide a variety of information related to marketing your farm and selling your produce. The day begins with a morning session focused on using GAP (Good Agricultural Practice) principles to improve farm food safety led by Chris Blanchard. This course provides practical, first-hand knowledge and experience with good agricultural practices. It is designed for local growers who provide (or want to provide) food directly to consumers through community-supported agriculture, farmers markets and on-farm sales. Chris provides consulting and education for farming, food, and business through Flying Rutabaga Works. He has worked in farming for the past 24 years, managing farms and operations around the country. As the owner and operator of Rock Spring Farm since 1999, Chris raised twenty acres of vegetables, herbs, and greenhouse crops, marketed through a 200-member year-round CSA, food stores, and farmers markets.
After lunch, Tony Whitefeather of Whitefeather Organics, Custer, WI will share his knowledge and experiences with the organic certification process. Jack Chang, Agriculture Program Specialist at the Wisconsin Farm Center of Wisconsin DATCP will, with the help of some volunteers, demonstrate how to build your own portable hand washing station. The day will wrap up with Chris Holman of Nami Moon Farms, Custer, WI talking about marketing best practices.
